POETRY TALK: Julian Talamantez Brolaski & Kay Gabriel

And Hallooo Transmagnified Body!

Few poets have explored the possibilities of U.S. American English in the last 15 years more persistently and imaginatively than Julian Talamantez Brolaski (born 1978 in La Jolla) and Kay Gabriel (born 1993 in Ottawa).

Julian Talamantez Brolaski’s breakthrough debut collection gowanus atropolis was published by Ugly Duckling Press in 2011. The poems collected there, says poet CAConrad, bend the muscle of light, and Brolaski inverts language, renewing it from within with neologisms and borrowings from the likes of Shakespeare, Hank Williams, and Groucho Marx. Kay Gabriel first gained public attention with an anthology on “Radical Trans Poetics” (Nightboat Books, 2020) which she co-edited with Andrea Abi-Karam. Critics especially praised her most recent book of poetry “A Queen in Bucks County” (Nightboat Books, 2022), considering it as “committedly horny”, a key epistolary novel in verse, a “pornotract” that resisted appropriation and tokenization of queer and trans authors. Julian Talamantez Brolaski and Kay Gabriel will read new poems and talk with poet and translator Ann Cotten.

The event will be interpreted English-German.
