Volker Braun was born 1939 in Dresden and lives in Berlin. After working in a print shop and at the Schwarze Pumpe gas combine, he studied philosophy in Leipzig and became a dramaturg at the Berliner Ensemble. From 2006 to 2010, Volker Braun was director of the literature section of the Akademie der Künste Berlin. He received the Georg Büchner Prize in 2000. Most recently published: “Fortwährender Versuch, mit Gewalten zu leben” (Suhrkamp Verlag 2024).

While the great old beech tree that gave this beautiful and traditional festival venue its name rustles its leaves in the summer wind, some of the poets from the Academy of Arts’ literature section will read their poems for us at Buchengarten: Volker Braun, Ann Cotten, Ulrike Draesner, Ursula Krechel, Monika Rinck and Kathrin Schmidt.
