Iranyi, Gabriel

Gabriel Iranyi was born in Cluj-Napoca (Transylvania, Romania). He studied composition at the George Dima Academy of Music at the university there. He was subsequently appointed professor of counterpoint at the George Enesco Academy of Music in Jassy in 1971. From 1977-1981 he was a lecturer in formal theory and counterpoint at the Rubin Academy of Music, Tel-Aviv University. In 1978 and 1984 he took part in the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music as a DAAD scholarship holder, in the composition classes of Lachenmann, Ferneyhough and Halffter. He holds a doctorate in musicology and has given numerous lectures on new music and his own works at national and international universities. Iranyi’s works have been honoured with numerous prizes. His works have been performed by internationally renowned interpreters, including Pierre-Yves Artaud, Carin Levine, Wu Wei, Nicholas Isherwood, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Björn Lehmann, Moritz Ernst, Christiane Edinger, Troels Svane, Minguet Quartet, Aron Quartet, Hugo-Wolf Quartet (Vienna), Modern Art Berlin, Trio SurPlus, Arcadie Flute Quartet, BerlinCounterpoint, Ensemble Meitar, and by orchestras such as Orchestre du Radio France, Jerusalem Radio Orchestra and Concerto Orchestra Bucharest. His works are published by Verlag Neue Musik Berlin and his CDs by kreuzberg records, Hungaroton Classic and Stan Records.
